It's soooo hot in New York City today. Some of us are going a little crazy. This morning on the traffic report I heard the announcer say, "Stay away from the southbound Westside Highway. There is a man on the side of the road at 30th Street trying to balance a watermelon wedge on his head and everyone is slowing down to look. You might think this is part of a promotion, but it's not. It's just a guy balancing a watermelon on his head." This is why I love living in New York - we have a special brand of crazies.
Ah, I miss the crazies. I used to drive in from Rockland County almost every day, and right where I'd merge onto the FDR from the GWB there was always this guy who had all sorts of odd "garbage" that he'd do stuff with. He'd make 3D collages out of toys. He'd do tai-chi type moves. Sometimes he'd just be waving to passing cars. He'd have a broken chair that he'd jerry-rigged with another chair and an umbrella and a doll to be a combination sculpture/place to sit. It was hard to explain him to anyone who hadn't seen him, but I actually looked forward to seeing him on my drive in (the ONLY thing to look forward to when stuck in a.m. rush hour traffic!).
ReplyDeleteHelen - I know EXACTLY who you mean. I used to see that guy as I drove up the FDR to get to Unilever in Englewood Cliffs all the time. He was absolutely hilarious. Every time we passed by with a car full of colleagues, we'd check out the daily tableau. And that creepy, raggedy doll! Too much!

ReplyDeleteThat is fascinating! Perhaps the watermelon balancer (or other folks of similar talents) are the cause for much of the unexplained traffic I often find myself in? At least now I can imagine that might be the case. Perhaps one day when I am stuck in traffic I will text Carey Shwindenhammer(sp?) and say that there is a guy juggling chainsaws near exit 15W on the turnpike and advise people to take the eastern spur...
