Milestones

1. My haircutter told me at my last appointment that my hair is now even on both sides, and he no longer has to cut one side differently to camouflage an inconsistency. He was going to pop some champagne, but alas, no bubbly for me in my condition. (By the way, didn't it take forever to grow out my hair!? No one could tell there was any difference for some time now, but there was. The texture and density were different. Apparently it takes a while for blood supply to return to the follicles so they begin to function normally again. Who knew? Turns out my follicles were more traumatized than I was.)

2. I just drove on the highway for the first time this past weekend. I didn't feel entirely comfortable because turning my head from side to side still triggers the vertigo sensation, so switching lanes is a little unsettling. But it really was time - and it went fine. But if you see me on the roads in a little silver jetta - may want to keep your distance.

3. I cooked something last night. Terry is still in Argentina and I've already finished the package of English Muffins that was in the freezer (I've been getting home from work way too late to have the patience to wait for takeout), so I actually resorted to making something all by myself. Mac n Cheese with tuna and peas. I don't know if you would count this as cooking, but I do since I combined ingredients that didn't originally come together. Plus I had to use the stove top and several kitchen gadgets such as a slotted spoon, a can opener and a collander. Consider how desperate I am: last week I was still hungry after finishing some doggy bag chicken so I topped it off with three spoonfuls of chunky peanutbutter.

4. Terry has ordered the range for the kitchen. There is no turning back. After torturing for several months about whether the love of his life was a Thermador, a Blue Star or an American Range, he went with the American Range. They start ripping out our kitchen on March 10th. Seriously, could I have timed this worse? Taking chaos in stride is going to be an early life lesson for Baby Voltz. Here's a picture of the range. We might include this picture on the birth announcements.

Still here!

I've gotten a lot of emails expressing concern since I haven't posted in a while. Thanks for worrying, guys - I'm completely fine!

I was away from my computer for a few days because I was in my home town for the weekend visiting with a group of my closest friends from high school. We have an annual weekend every summer hosted by one of us. This year was local (Port Washington), so I was able to go. We did a lot of reminiscing including a reenactment of the picture we placed in the ad section of our senior year book (poster size of the original is at the base of the stairs).

I personally believe the last two decades have been exceptionally kind to all of us. With age we've gained the valuable wisdom that electric blue eyeliner and frosted pink lipstick are not flattering. Having said that, we did agree that we may have been on to something with those bannana clips. The long haired amongst us may try to bring them back.

It was so much fun - and worth every minute of the resulting recuperative down time required by a serious case of sensory overload. I have been asleep on the couch nursing a headache since Sunday, but I wouldn't have traded it for anything.

Thanks, girls! Can't wait for next year...

Stop the madness

Although I may not be entirely physically ready (but getting there!), there are some VERY strong signs that it's time to go back to work. Specifically, these are some of the things I did today:

  1. Posted a comment on a blog about waffle irons. I am one hundred percent serious. What could I possibly have to say about waffle irons? Something, apparently. (Here's what I said)
  2. Purged and reorganized my sock drawer and then decided socks make good dust rags because you can put your hand inside. There are about 50 of them in a bag under my sink right now, and I even took the time to separate them all for easier access when I get a dusting whim.
  3. Watched four hour long episodes in a row of "Shear Genius" - the hair version of "Project Runway" - hosted by Jaclyn Smith. I only stopped watching because Terry came home from work and insisted I stop. I actually suggested he might like it because he liked Charlie's Angels when he was a kid, and I was serious.
What has happened to me?

Dream weaver

As a fellow folically challenged girl growing out a bad shave, I'm happy to see Brit's stubble is long enough to get her weave on. Truthfully, it looks pretty bad, but TMZ reports she's got a touch up visit scheduled over the next few days. And I suppose it's better than those hideous wigs she's been sporting.

Things are not always as they seem

I wrote in an earlier post that I had achieved the most significant recovery milestone last week. My decidedly down-town hair stylist came up to the apartment and cut my hair. God bless him. He arrived with all the necessary tools in a stylin leather euro-style case. We had promised him we'd cook a meal for him, but Terry ended up traveling for business that day and came home too late to cook. So when Thomas was done, we called a car service to take us all to a neighborhood spot. The local town car service is more convenient and less expensive than hailing a yellow cab.

I didn't see them, but apparently some of my friends from the building were sitting out on a balcony when we left for dinner. I received an email from one of them a couple of days later:
"Last Wed., when Michelle and I were at Matthias' apartment, we witnessed you from the balcony getting into a limo with Terry and a bald man with a briefcase. And you were wearing sweat pants. It was all very John Le Carre. What's going on?"

This is how rumors get started. Don't worry guys, the only sin was that hair!

Six Week Status Report

I have reached the most important recovery milestone. More significant than the end of brain swelling. More humanizing than the removal of sutures. More enabling than making it up and down the stairs in my apartment.

I have gotten my haircut for the first time in two and a half months. Not an appropriate amount of time to wait for a short-haired girl wishing to avoid Patrick Swayze comparisons.

Last night my hairdresser made the long and lonely trek from the Meatpacking district to my apartment and restored some normalcy to my head. God bless him. He's not only talented, he's compassionate. You can not tell at all that there is a significant chunk of hair missing - completely masqueraded with some clever asymmetrical optical illusions.

Some of you have accused me of exaggerating how bad my hair looked. Perhaps we have different standards - no offense. Thomas said it all when he raised his eyebrows and said, "Well, sweetie, I didn't come too early."
